Interview contin:
When the story was finally settled on, I thought, “Wow, as expected of Mr. Takumi.”

—-So is Mr. Takumi pretty knowledgeable about the Meiji era?

T: Well to be honest, I suck at history…. So that was a new challenge for me as well. Though I did make a court battle game with lawyers as characters despite having 0 knowledge of the law or the court system.  There were talks at first to have a lawyer edit the first GS game, but I thought, the game turned out that way because I had 0 knowledge of the actual law system. So this time, instead of making it a historically accurate game, this game will be a mystery game set in the Meiji era of the GS world that Wright’s ancestor lived and thrived in.

Red text box title: I deepened my understanding of the characters as I wrote the scenarios

——So Phoenix Wright(Naruhodo Ryuichi)’s ancestor is the main character. What kind of person is Ryunosuke?

T: Well, just think “Meiji era” and “Phoenix(Naruhodo kun)’s ancestor”, and imagine what kind of person he would be.

——Alright, so what kind of person is Susato, Ryunosuke’s partner?

K: Exactly the way she looks.  She is a Yamato Nadeshiko and is capable of tying up loose ends that need to be tied up.  She is a very reliable girl.

——By, “ties up loose ends”, does that mean Ryunosuke can’t do that himself?

T: Well it is hard to fight genetics (Laugh). But to be honest, even I feel like I have just met them and still need to get to know them better.  As the creation process goes on, I think our understanding of them will become deeper.  A person’s true character really comes out in certain situations, and their responses to them, so I am waiting for that moment of true character to come out as I write out the story.

——I can see in her quote that Susato calls Ryunosuke, “Naruhodo-sama”.

T: It is set in the Meiji era, so of course the speech would be a little different.  If she called him “Naruhodo-kun”, it wouldn’t fit with the times, and would be awkward.  See this is a pretty difficult time period to get the right balance of modern and old.  The country had just opened up to the west, and the clash between the west and Japanese culture was pretty chaotic at the time.  The rest of the world at the time was changing rapidly and was full of energy, what with the Industrial revolution and the new century.  When I researched a little, it turns out that “lawyers” were a new concept back then, and had really just started existing in Japan.  Back then, “lawyer” or someone that spoke in place of another person, and was an occupation that was looked down upon and disrespected by the general public.  I am working hard to make sure that kind of historical atmosphere isn’t lost as well.

——So that era had that kind of background.  Will the basic gameflow be similar to the other GS games?

T: Yes.  There will be the familiar court part, and the investigation part, but these will have new elements in them.

——What are these new elements?

T: I can’t say what those are yet.   But it will give a different playing feel compared to the past GS games.

——Around when do you plan on revealing more information?

K: The details are still under wraps, but next time, we will expect to show some game play screenshots, as well as more information.  The visuals and presentation have been drastically changed, so I’m sure there will be many people that will say, “So that’s the angle they took!” in surprise.  Until then, please wait but be excited!

——-Ok.  Last but not least, please give us a message for those fans that are already excited for this new game.

T: I know it’s been a while since I’ve made a GS game for the main series, and I realize many things have changed since then and I’m pretty nervous.   But as usual I will give it my all to do my best and try to live up to my old works, and bring out a product that won’t lose to them.

K: I a new, non-numbered installment of the series, a new turnabout court will begin.  This game is interesting and full of potential, and is not merely a ‘style change’ from the past works.  Although I’m not allowed to reveal much right now, the next time we release information, I’m sure people will be able to fully understand why we made the setting this way and why these characters are who they are.  I’m sure the information and background that will be revealed in the future will not disappoint!

Purple Mikotoba quote: “Naruhodo-sama, I will be sure to be of use!”

Orange text: The flower that blooms in the new world. Mikotoba Susato.

Brown text box: Mr. Takumi’s comment –
Under some circumstance, this young lady ends up being Naruhodo’s judicial assistant.  A lover of foreign detective stories, she is a dreamer and a progressive thinking yamato nadeshiko.  At first glance, she seems to be a “reliable, high-class lady”….it is exciting to see what kind of role she will play in this story.  Even while writing the scenario, it’s hard to take my eyes off it!
